Max Verstappen beats Lewis Hamilton to win Silverstone Grand Prix on 70th anniversary

Max Verstappen was the victor as F1 celebrated 70 years of championship action at Silverstone.

The Red Bull driver ended Lewis Hamilton's three-race winning streak with a bold tyre strategy on a sweltering hot day.

It ends Mercedes' dominant start to the 2020 season with Valtteri Bottas, who started on pole, finishing third.

Though Mercedes struggled on their tyre strategy with Verstappen, who started on the durable hard tyre, taking advantage.

At one stage, he was told to drop off Hamilton's gearbox to protect his tyres though said over the radio: “This is the only chance to beat Mercedes. I am not going to sit back like a grandma."

Bottas pitted from the lead on lap 13 with Hamilton following in for new tyres on the following lap.

Verstappen took the lead and, when he came in at the midway stage of the race, he left the pits just behind Bottas.

Red Bull ace Verstappen soon overtook Bottas though, and kept the lead right through after the pair both pitted with 20 laps remaining for a second time.

Hamilton didn’t pit again until the 41st lap, coming out in fourth though he soon overtook Charles Leclerc.

And he limbed into second as he got the better of his Mercedes team-mate Bottas around the outside of Brooklands.

The victory moves Verstappen into second in the championship, closing the gap behind Hamilton at the top to 30 points.

Red Bull chief Christian Horner said: "Max was just chilling out at the start of the race. We just had them covered today.

“There is a lot to learn from today, the car worked fantastically today.

"Whatever they brought, Max was able to cover them. We were surprised that we were the only ones to give it a try on the softer tyre.
