The 6th Foundation Day of Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) was celebrated with great enthusiasm and spirit at the Gun and Shell Factory (GSF), Kolkata.
AWEIL was established on October 1, 2021, as part of the restructuring of India’s ordnance factories. Its primary objective was to enhance operational autonomy, improve efficiency, and unlock new avenues for growth and innovation. AWEIL is dedicated to manufacturing a wide range of small and large-caliber weapons for the Indian Armed Forces, domestic civilian use, and export.
The Gun and Shell Factory, a prestigious institution under AWEIL, is the oldest industrial establishment among India’s ordnance factories. With a rich legacy spanning over 220 years, the factory is renowned for its excellence in defense production and innovation.

On this special occasion, Shri Subir Kumar Saha, the Chief General Manager of the Gun and Shell Factory, lit the factory’s ceremonial torch and hoisted the AWEIL flag. During the event, the Chief General Manager and other senior officials discussed the factory’s ongoing efforts and initiatives aimed at maintaining the highest standards of quality and production efficiency, in alignment with the goal of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India).
Shri Saha also commended the enthusiastic participation of the workforce in production activities. He further noted that, as a result of various initiatives, the quality control system has evolved from a routine inspection-based activity into an integrated system of quality assurance and continuous improvement. This has enabled quality to be established as an integral part of the entire manufacturing process. In recognition of its sustained efforts to achieve significant success and excellence in quality, the Gun and Shell Factory has been awarded the ‘Best Quality Controller’ award by AWEIL.
