SOLUKHUMBU: Garma Secondary School, located in Solududhkunda Municipality-7 of Solukhumbu district, has established a revolving fund of Rs 11.5 million to secure a long-term financial base for its operations.

The endowment fund was set up to eliminate the school’s annual reliance on grants and donations for regular operating expenses, aiming instead to create a sustainable source of income.

According to Sonam Gyaljen Sherpa, chairman of Solududhkunda Municipality Ward No. 7, the fundraising initiative was initially launched with a target of Rs 10 million. However, the campaign successfully collected Rs 1.5 million more than its original goal, thanks to generous contributions from former students residing in Nepal and abroad, as well as individuals associated with Garma.

The collected money was formally handed over to Headmaster Binod Singh Tamang and School Management Committee Chairman Domi Sherpa. School authorities stated that interest earned from the fund will be allocated toward improving educational quality, supporting student welfare, enhancing infrastructure, and managing teaching materials.

“The purpose of the revolving fund is not to collect money and spend it immediately, but to create a long-term source of income for the school,” Ward Chairman Sherpa said. “The earnings generated will be utilized for educational quality enhancement, student welfare, and sustainable financial management of the school.” He added that regular interest income will prevent the school from having to rely on donors for minor operational expenses.

Community schools across Nepal often struggle to secure additional funding beyond staff salaries for educational materials, laboratories, information technology, libraries, extra-curricular activities, scholarships, and physical infrastructure. The newly established fund is expected to provide Garma Secondary School with stable financial self-reliance.
